Powering Netflix’s First Daily Live Game Show

See how our synchronized, ultra-low-latency streaming platform was used to power the new real-time gameplay experience behind Best Guess Live, ensuring high scale and absolute fairness.

Behind the Platform of Best Guess Live

Ex Machina partnered with Netflix Games and Apploff Entertainment to design, build, and deliver the platform behind Best Guess Live, Netflix’s first-ever daily live mobile game show.

In Best Guess Live, Players join a live show hosted by Hunter March and Howie Mandel, receive a series of fast-paced clues, and get a single chance to lock in their answer.
Answer earliest and correctly? You win a share of the cash prize. Miss? You’re out for that puzzle.

We are proud that Livery Video provides Ex Machina with low-latency video to allow for synchronized streams across all players, enriched with AI real-time subtitles.

This project represents a major leap forward for interactive entertainment. It brings together real-time gameplay, synchronized live video, and mobile streaming at scale.

Designing the Platform Behind Best Guess Live

From the start, Ex Machina’s mission was clear:

Create a highly scalable, reliable, and fully synchronized platform capable of powering a live game show for a massive audience, every single day.

To achieve this, Ex Machina served as the technical partner, architecting and developing:

  • The real-time gameplay logic
  • The full server and cloud infrastructure
  • The iOS and Android apps
  • The producer console
  • Prize, timing, and user management systems
  • All gameplay and interaction mechanics

All of this is built on top of PlayTwo, Ex Machina’s real-time interactive framework designed for high-scale, appointment-based formats.

Livery Video integration

To deliver a seamless “everyone plays on a level playing field” video experience and real-time captions, Ex Machina integrated Livery Video’s synchronized low-latency streaming and AI-driven real-time subtitles into the wider platform:

Livery’s Synchronized low-latency streaming

While latency is important, synchronization matters even more to prevent cheating. That’s why Livery has built an end-to-end solution that ensures synchronized delivery. No discrepancies, no cheating or getting ahead, no matter where you are, on what device you are playing or how fast your internet connection is.

Livery’s AI-driven real-time subtitles

Livery uses a unique, separate real-time data connection to deliver captions instantly, without affecting stream performance or latency. This allows subtitles to be delivered instantly, independent from the video itself.

The Platform

In summary, the Best Guess Live platform that Ex Machina built combines:

  • PlayTwo Real-Time Framework: Gameplay logic, timing, user state, rewards, and core interactivity.
  • Scalable Cloud Backend: Redundant systems built for high-concurrency spikes.
  • Low-Latency Video via Livery: Synchronized streams across all players, with AI real-time subtitles.
  • Producer Console: Tools for live show control: triggering clues, managing sequences, running rehearsals.
  • iOS & Android Applications: Consistent, responsive, and fully synchronized user gameplay.
  • Third-Party Production Integrations: Supporting the workflow of Netflix, Apploff, and production teams.
  • Monitoring + Security Layer: Ensuring reliability, stability, and real-time visibility into platform performance.
